California Artist Candida von Braun’s Equus Series Captivates Times Square Audiences with Towering 23-Story Display
Healdsburg, CA — July 29, 2014 – In a breathtaking showcase of equestrian power and grace, California-based artist Candida von Braun recently captivated New York City with a monumental display of her work, scaling 23 stories in the heart of Times Square. Von Braun’s celebrated Equus Series, awarded this prestigious presentation through See.me’s annual “Art Takes Times Square” competition, brought her unique equine portraits to life in one of the world’s most iconic public venues, reaching audiences from across the globe.
Von Braun, a fifth-generation visual artist, offered viewers a rare glimpse into her intimate world of classical dressage through works featuring her Lusitano stallion, Herodes do Alentejo, alongside “Larapio,” a revered breeding stallion of Barbier Farm, and other acclaimed pieces from her Equus Series, including “Best Friends,” “Wild One,” and “Eye of the Storm.” These works blend realism with abstraction to capture the intricate emotional presence of her subjects, rendered in acrylic layers on raw linen canvases sourced from Irish monasteries. Each painting serves as an exploration of spirit and energy, unfolding the timeless bond between horse and human.
Reflecting on the experience, von Braun remarked, “Seeing my work resonate in such an iconic setting was deeply moving. Each horse’s spirit seemed to soar, inviting viewers to connect with these noble animals’ strength and elegance.”
A lifelong devotee to the arts, von Braun’s practice spans painting, photography, architecture, and sculpture. Her Equus Series is both a tribute to her classical dressage background and an artistic investigation into the tension between realism and abstraction. Utilizing mineral-toned acrylics and heavy layering techniques, von Braun captures the horses’ raw personalities, rendering them as visual allegories of intrinsic qualities: shelter, resilience, freedom, and grace. Her unique approach, described as both visceral and poetic, invites viewers to find reflections of their own strength within each piece.
Von Braun’s Equus Series embodies an invitation to connect with life’s raw power and grounding grace. The artist concludes, “Horses hold traits we aspire to cultivate within ourselves. ‘Best Friends’ conveys a protective bond, while ‘Wild One’ embodies readiness and resilience. I hope these pieces inspire others to tap into that shared spirit.”
